Noxious Weed Overview

Important Notice: Idaho Code 22-2407 states that Idaho property owners have the responsibility of controlling noxious weeds on their property.  The County Weed Superintendents may only treat noxious weeds on private property if the owner fails to control the weeds.  If this occurs, the County will treat the noxious weeds and bill the property owner for the weed control.

Idaho Code lists 64 plant species as noxious weeds because they pose a threat to public health, livestock, crops, and private property.  For a comprehensive list of the state’s designated noxious weeds, click here.

Why is a Weed Control Program Important?

Weeds pose several threats to the environment: they reduce farm productivity, decrease land value, degrade the soil, and can be deadly to animal and human health if consumed.  Noxious weeds can also displace that native vegetation that is food for wildlife.  In addition, weeds can become a major fuel source for devastating wild fires. Finally, the weeds can have a negative impact on irrigation, power generation, and recreation.
